It looks like the bottom one, doesn’t it? But they’re actually the same length.

Your visual system operates by certain laws and principals. It always works the same way, which is why this illusion works the same for you as it does for me (assuming we both have healthy eyesight). This example shows that when we alter the typical circumstances, even a healthy visual system calculates things differently.

For those whose abuse has resulted in PTSD, self-harm, eating disorders or other problems, the same principal applies. It’s not “crazy” to react in extreme fear to things after a trauma, for instance. Or to feel hate towards yourself when you grew up in an environment that encouraged self-hate. It’s your healthy mind and healthy emotional system reacting to an intense alteration of typical circumstances.

If you already knew when you first looked at the two lines above that they were the same length, your mind compensated for it. It helped you to remember what you had learned and it corrected for your tendency to misread what you saw. In the same way, although your perceptions may be flawed due to altered circumstances, you are still healthy and functioning correctly.

You have the power to change how you perceive things over time and you can do it, because you are still healthy.

This Blood Lamp doesn’t look that bloody, but the way you turn it on can be considered gruesome. It only works once, and you need to add of a drop of your blood to activate it! The idea is to stop and think about how badly you need light before you use it. Designer Mike Thompson created the lamp in order to draw attention to how much energy we waste.

Hugging someone is a way of showing that we care, and for both the hugged and hugger, it feels good. When growing up, we are very sensitive to touch. We recognize our parents initially through sense of touch.

Oxytocin is a neurotransmitter that acts like a hormone and helps promote trust. It’s released in the body when we feel safe. This could be through breast-feeding (when we’re little), holding hands, snuggling, dancing with someone, during a massage or body work out or things that generally make us feel at ease. Hugging is definitely one of the things that make us release oxytocin.
